The UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme offers registered doctoral students an opportunity to utilize UNU-WIDER’s resources and facilities for their PhD dissertation or thesis research focusing on developing economies. Additionally, participants can collaborate with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest. Typically, visiting PhD fellows spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER before returning to their home institution. During their stay, fellows write one or more research articles and give a seminar on their findings, with the prospect of publishing their work in the WIDER Working Paper Series.
Selection Criteria:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program and demonstrate their abilities to undertake research on developing economies.
- Candidates from other social sciences backgrounds are welcome to apply, but it is important to note that UNU-WIDER primarily focuses on economics.
- Proficiency in oral and written English, as well as strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills, are required.
- Applications from early-career researchers, female researchers, and those from developing countries are particularly encouraged. The programme is especially beneficial for researchers in the later stages of their PhD studies.
- The Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme is highly competitive, and only a limited number of fellows are accepted each year, with a success rate of approximately one percent based on recent years’ data.
Financial Assistance:
- For fellows undertaking the fellowship in Helsinki, UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant covering transportation expenses to and from the fellow’s PhD granting institution or country of residence, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services during the fellowship period), and a monthly stipend of EUR 2,000 to cover living expenses in Helsinki. However, expenses related to dependents are not covered by the programme.
Application Procedure:
- UNU-WIDER accepts online applications for the Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme twice a year.
- The deadlines for submission of applications are March 31st and September 30th, 23:59 UTC+3, annually.
- Applicants applying in September would visit UNU-WIDER for three months between March and June of the following year, while those applying in March would undertake their fellowship between September and November of the same year.
