IEG 2024 Fellowship: Fast-Track Doctoral Study in Germany

IEG welcomes applications from both domestic and international PhD students who hold at least a Master’s degree in fields such as history, theology, or other disciplines with a historical focus. Applicants should have been engaged in their doctoral studies for a maximum of three years by the application deadline, although exceptions to this rule may be considered. As a research institution independent of any university affiliation, IEG does not conduct examinations or confer academic degrees. Instead, fellows complete their dissertations under the guidance of their home university supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for IEG Fellowships, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be international doctoral students.
  • They must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral program.
  • Dissertations must be supervised by the fellowship holder’s advisor at their home university.

Benefits

1. Fellowship Stipends (effective from 01/01/2019)

Funded by both federal and state governments, IEG Fellowships support research projects outlined in the application. During the fellowship period, recipients are not permitted to seek or accept other employment or funding. Doctoral student fellowships carry a monthly stipend of €1,350.

2. Family Allowance

Fellows whose partners join them in Mainz and have a monthly income of no more than €450 may be eligible for a family allowance. Applicants should indicate whether their partner will accompany them in Mainz in their application.

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit the following documents in the specified order:

1. Completed application form

2. Curriculum vitae and list of publications (if applicable), excluding photographs

3. An overview of the doctoral thesis, limited to 15,000 characters (not including spaces and footnotes)

4. Structure of the Ph.D. thesis

5. Detailed timetable for the intended stay at the Institute

6. copies of academic records and evidence of linguistic ability
