The Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling, presented by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the ONE Campaign, and the Elliott family, is now open for entries.
This award recognizes emerging African journalists dedicated to amplifying voices and shedding light on the significant transformations occurring across the continent. Entries must showcase pioneering journalistic work published between December 1, 2022, and December 1, 2023. Winners will be selected based on the quality of their articles and the impact of their work on communities. Exceptional submissions across all media formats are encouraged, particularly those demonstrating analytical skills alongside exceptional storytelling.
Rewards Winners will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and a personalized award certificate. Additionally, they will have the unique opportunity to spend two weeks at The Economist headquarters in London.
Eligibility Criteria
- The competition welcomes participation from English-proficient journalists engaged in print, broadcast, and online news media across Africa. Applicants should possess no more than 10 years of journalism experience.
- Participants must submit a single published piece that reflects Africa through insightful reporting and exceptional storytelling. The emphasis is on impactful investigative or explanatory pieces, particularly those shedding light on transformative changes in Africa.
- Submitted works must be in English. Works in other languages should be accompanied by English translations. Entries are accepted from print, broadcast, or digital journalists. Multimedia submissions may include web, audio, video, visual, or mixed media formats.
- Entries must have been published between December 1, 2022, and December 1, 2023.
An esteemed international jury, comprising media experts from the US, UK, and Africa, will determine the winners. All applicants will be notified of their application status by spring 2024.
