Women comprise more than half of the college-educated workforce globally, yet they represent only 28% of STEM fields. Women and girls aspiring to explore STEM often encounter obstacles in fields traditionally dominated by men. Recognizing this disparity, we have established a program dedicated to empowering the future of women in STEM fields. By offering girls worldwide the chance to delve into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, we aim to reshape this trend and broaden opportunities for women’s perspectives, contributing to the overarching goal of achieving a sustainable future.
Scholarship recipients will engage in a 12-week all-virtual program focused on emerging and crucial STEM skills and fields, global competence education, and social impact (developed in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania). They will enhance their STEM knowledge and skills through interactive, hands-on curriculum while honing critical global competencies, such as problem-solving, analytical skills, intercultural understanding, and cross-cultural collaboration.
The program concludes with team projects and presentations addressing real-world challenges, with a focus on climate change and the energy transition. Graduates of the program will receive the Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact, jointly presented by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. Funding for these scholarships is provided by bp, a global energy company.
