American University’s 2025 Global Leader Scholar Award: Empowering International Students

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational opportunities, international diversity, and leadership development. Embodying AU’s commitment to academic excellence and global engagement, the AU Emerging Global Leader strives to achieve, inspire, and serve with vision. Dedicated to catalyzing positive civic and social change, the AU EGL intends to return to their home country to uplift under-resourced and underserved communities. Benefits:

  • The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses, including full tuition, room, and board, for one international student requiring a non-immigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States. However, it excludes expenses not included in the bill, such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and other miscellaneous expenses (estimated at around U.S.$4,000 per year).
  • The AU EGL scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic performance. Applicants interested in any major offered at AU are eligible to apply.

Requirements:

You are ineligible to apply if:

  • You hold U.S. citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, U.S. pending permanent residency, or dual citizenship of the U.S. and another country.
  • You are currently enrolled in or have commenced post-secondary studies at another university in your home country or the United States.
  •  You completed secondary school before 2022.

Preference will be given to applicants who:

  1. Have overcome various obstacles and challenges, particularly those from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  2. Demonstrate a minimum GPA equivalent of 3.8 out of 4.0 (or in the top 10% of their graduating class) for grades 9th-12th.
  3. Exhibit a commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and addressing the needs of people in their home country.
  4. Achieve proficiency in English with one of the following:

   – A TOEFL iBT score of 95 or above (with all subscores 20 or higher)

   – A paper-based TOEFL score of 24 or above (taken after May 31, 2017)

   – An IELTS score of 7.0 or above (with all subscores 6.0 or higher)

   – A minimum of 33 on the SAT Reading subscore   – A minimum ACT English score of 29

   – A PTE score of 65 or above

   – A Duolingo score of 125 or above (with all subscores 115 or higher)

   – A Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher (with each subscore 169 or higher).

  • Are still enrolled in secondary/high school and will graduate by June 2024.
  • Note: Students in the IB system should plan to graduate with a full IB diploma with at least 3 HL subjects, while those in the British A-Levels system must complete at least 3 A levels and 13 years of study before August 2024.

Selection Process

The selection process for the AU EGLS is extremely competitive, and applicants who fulfill all necessary requirements by December 15, 2023, will receive priority consideration. This includes submitting the AU EGLS application, Common Application, and international admissions documents, along with proof of English proficiency and a bank letter confirming a minimum of US$4,000.

Semi-finalists and finalists for the AU EGL will undergo Zoom interviews and may be required to submit additional essays. For inquiries, please contact intadm@american.edu.

Method of Application

To apply for the AU EGLS, applicants must apply for Regular Decision for the fall (August) 2024 term. Applications submitted through Early Decision (ED) will not be considered.

Application Instructions:

  1. Complete the AU EGLS application on the Future Eagle Portal.
  2. Submit a bank letter confirming a minimum of US$4,000. This can be uploaded to the Future Eagle Portal or sent by fax.
  3. Provide official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English Test scores by December 15, 2023. Scores must be transmitted directly from the testing agency.
  4. Submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, including all necessary documents, by either the priority deadline of December 15, 2023, or the final deadline of January 15, 2024, for the AU EGLS, at the latest. The preliminary AU EGLS application packet must include the bank letter confirming a minimum of US$4,000.
  5. If applying through EducationUSA or as a past FLEX or YES high school scholarship recipient, provide a letter from your EducationUSA centre’s adviser confirming your candidacy.
  6. Applicants not selected as finalists may still be considered for admission to American University, Washington, DC, and eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, to proceed with the application process, evidence of funds amounting to US$78,296 for the initial year of study will be necessary.
