However, it’s important to note that non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, and miscellaneous costs (approximately U.S. $4,000 per year) are not part of the scholarship’s coverage. Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the AU EGL scholarship, prospective candidates should fulfill the following requirements:
- AU EGL applicants must apply for Regular Decision for the fall (August) 2023 term, not Early Decision (ED).
- Preference is given to international students who have overcome various obstacles and challenges and those hailing from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- A minimum equivalent of 3.8 GPA out of 4.0 GPA (or ranking in the top 10% of their graduating class) for 9th–12th grades is expected.
- A demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and improving conditions in their home country is essential.
- Proficiency in one of the following English language proficiency tests is required:
- 95+ TOEFL iBT (with all subscores at 20 or above)
- 7.0+ IELTS (with all subscores at 6.0 or above)
- 600+ paper-based TOEFL (taken after May 31, 2017)
- Sub-scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL (taken after May 31, 2017)
- Eligible candidates are those still enrolled in secondary or high school and set to graduate by June 2023.
Ineligible Applicants:
You are NOT eligible to apply if you fall into the following categories:

Ensure you submit essential documents, such as a bank letter and the AU Certification of Finances (AU CFIS) form, each demonstrating a minimum of U.S. $ 4,000 in financial support. You can upload these documents via your Future Eagle Portal or send them by fax.
For official English proficiency test scores, including TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English Test, make sure to submit them by December 15, 2023, at the latest. These scores should be sent directly by the testing agency to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia.
Lastly, complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application along with all supporting documents according to the AU EGL priority deadline of December 15, 2023, or no later than January 15, 2024.
