The Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth PhD Studentships offer assistance for research endeavors focused on themes related to the Commonwealth. These studentships are funded by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs and its publisher, Routledge, in collaboration with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
Eligibility Criteria
The proposed research must fulfill at least one of the following conditions:
- Relate to the Commonwealth as a whole or any Commonwealth-wide institution or organization.
- Have a Commonwealth comparative aspect.
- Be relevant to more than one Commonwealth country.
Benefits
There are two available studentships, each with a value of up to GBP 5,500:
- One for PhD students enrolled at UK universities.
- One for PhD students enrolled at ACU member universities in Commonwealth countries other than the UK.

Requirements
Applications are invited from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. Preference might be shown towards disciplines commonly addressed in The Round Table journal, including politics, international relations, economics, international history, geography, law, development studies, and area studies. It is not necessary for the applicant’s PhD/DPhil research to already focus on the Commonwealth. Applications are particularly encouraged where the award will enable the addition of a Commonwealth dimension to the research.
Selection Process:
Mentorship:
As part of the studentship, candidates are required to select and collaborate with a mentor from a university in a Commonwealth country other than their own. The mentor should possess expertise in a subject relevant to the applicant’s research and offer guidance and support throughout the duration of the studentship.
The mentor’s responsibilities include:
- Arranging at least two virtual meetings with the student throughout the duration of the studentship.
- Engaging with the student via email to share their knowledge, provide advice on publishing, discuss events and trends in their field, and encourage the exploration of new ideas.
- Contributing to either the podcast or article that the student will produce upon completion of the studentship.
Mentors will receive an honorarium of £500 GBP, which will be paid upon the conclusion of the studentship. They must adhere to the mentor code of conduct guidelines.
