2024 Fully Funded University of Sheffield Master’s Scholarship: Empowering African Students

In partnership with the University of Sheffield Africa Scholarship Trust, the Department of Geography is pleased to announce the availability of one scholarship for a postgraduate teaching student from Africa in 2024.

Scholarship Benefits:

The scholarship for 2024 provides the following assistance:

  • A complete waiver of tuition fees
  • £8,000 for living expenses
  • Lodging in a private en-suite room within university residential halls.

Scholarship Courses:

The scholarship applies to the following courses::

  • MA International Development
  • MSc Environmental Change and International Development
  • MPH International Development

Eligibility Criteria:

1.         You must have received an offer to study one of the specified courses and be enrolled on the course at the University of Sheffield in September 2024.

2.         You must be classified as an overseas student for tuition fee purposes.

3.         You must be self-funded, meaning you are not financially supported by a research council, government, private enterprise, charity, or similar organization.

4.         You should not have previously pursued studies outside of your home country.

5.         You must not have previously studied outside your home country.

6.         This scholarship cannot be combined with any other funding awards, whether from the University of Sheffield or external sources.

7.         You must be enrolled on a full-time basis.

8.         Receiving the scholarship is contingent upon meeting any conditions attached to your offer by the deadline set by the Admissions Service.

9.         You must have an unconditional offer to study at the University by September 2, 2024.

10.      Receiving the scholarship is contingent upon successfully obtaining a visa to study at the University in September 2024.

11.      You must be a citizen of or permanently domiciled in an African country.

12.      The scholarship cannot be deferred, and students on leave of absence will not be eligible for the award upon their return to studies.

Selection Procedure

The selection process is competitive, and not all applications will be successful. A panel comprising senior staff members will evaluate and select the strongest applications.

The panel will specifically assess whether applicants have:

  • An outstanding academic track record
  • Provided a clear rationale for choosing a postgraduate program at the University of Sheffield
  • Outlined challenges faced in academic and professional endeavours and demonstrated successful resolution of these obstacles
  • Provided examples of relevant work experience in the field of International Development, including community and voluntary work
  • Articulated clear future aspirations related to the chosen postgraduate degree and how their learning will benefit individuals in their home country or Africa as a whole

Additionally, consideration will be given to whether candidates have encountered discrimination based on personal characteristics such as gender, race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
