Google places great importance on building and maintaining strong ties with the academic community. The goal of the Google PhD Fellowship Program is to recognize exceptional graduate students conducting innovative research in fields related to computer science. These fellowships aim to assist promising PhD candidates from diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to influencing the future of technology. Google is dedicated to nurturing diverse research communities and invites individuals from all backgrounds to apply. The Google PhD Fellowships are available in regions including Africa, Europe, India, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Latin America, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, and the United States.

Research Focus Areas

Google PhD Fellowship recipients are meticulously chosen by Google researchers and their affiliated institutions, identifying them as among the most promising young scholars globally. Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:

Requirements

  • For universities in Africa, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, East Asia, Europe, and the United States: The institution must be accredited as a research institution that grants research degrees to PhD students in computer science or a related field.

All regions:

  • Students must maintain full-time enrollment in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or risk forfeiting the award.
  • Individuals who are employed by Google, as well as their spouses, children, and household members, are not eligible.
  • Students who are already receiving a similar industry award are ineligible. Funding from government or non-profit organizations is exempt from this restriction.
  • Previous recipients of the Google PhD Fellowship are not eligible to reapply.
  • For incoming PhD students in Africa, India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia:
    • Receipt of the Fellowship does not guarantee admission to a PhD program. Applicants must separately apply and be accepted into a PhD program in computer science or a related field at an eligible institution.
    • Receiving the Fellowship does not ensure admission to a PhD program.

Benefits:

  • Recipients of the fellowship will be awarded named Fellowships, which include a monetary award. The funds are disbursed directly to the university to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. Furthermore, each student will be paired with a Google Research Mentor.
  • In Africa, the fellowship spans up to three years and includes a stipend of US $12,000 to cover research-related activities and travel expenses, including overseas travel. Participants will also benefit from mentorship by a Google Research Mentor.
