The Chatham House Mo Ibrahim Foundation Academy Fellowship, jointly established by Chatham House and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, provides early-to-mid career professionals with a unique opportunity to spend ten months at Chatham House focusing on an independent research project of their choice. Fellows engage in the Institute’s core activities, enhance their skills through a leadership program, and expand their professional network within the realm of international affairs.
Eligibility:
Citizenship: The fellowship is open to citizens of any African country, including those with dual nationality that includes an African country.
Education:
Applicants must hold a completed BA degree or its equivalent and possess research experience.
Career: Ideal candidates should be in the early-to-mid stages of their careers and come from various sectors such as academia, NGOs, businesses, government agencies, civil society, or the media. All applicants should demonstrate knowledge of and interest in international affairs, their chosen research area, and align with Chatham House’s mission and research objectives.
Age Limitations:
There are no age constraints for applicants to the fellowship.
Duration:
Academy Fellows are expected to dedicate ten months to their work at Chatham House, from October 2024 to July 2025.
Location:
The fellow will work full-time at Chatham House in London, with hybrid work arrangements also possible.
Remuneration and Benefits:
The fellow will receive a monthly stipend of £2,365 to cover living expenses in London, including accommodation, utilities, food, transportation, and other essentials.
The Academy covers reasonable expenses related to:
- Relocation, including flights, train tickets, visas, and accommodation for three nights.
- Payment of the UK’s Immigration Healthcare Surcharge for access to the National Health Service.
- Research, outreach, and dissemination costs, such as fieldwork, travel, conferences, and publications.
Upon completing the fellowship successfully, alumni gain access to:
- The Academy faculty and alumni network.
- A five-year membership with Chatham House.
Application Process:
To apply for the fellowship, applicants need to submit:
- Their CV or résumé.
- The names of two referees.
- A research project proposal based on the provided topic guidance.
Selection Criteria:
- Meet nationality requirements.
- Possess experience in independent research and hold at least an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification, or equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant field.
- Demonstrate relevant background experience, including experience in the proposed research field, as evidenced through a CV.
- Exhibit proven leadership experience or potential.
- Show dedication to the mission, goals, and values of Chatham House, and to identifying evidence-based solutions to global challenges.
- Articulate how the fellowship will enable them to make a positive impact, aligned with the Chatham House mission and the overarching purpose of Academy Fellowships.
- Demonstrate motivation to undertake the fellowship, fulfill all fellowship requirements, and leverage the networks, events, and opportunities offered at Chatham House.
- Display proficiency in spoken English.
Selection Process:
- Stage One: Complete the application. Following the application deadline, all submissions will undergo review and shortlisting by the selection committee.
- Stage Two: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a Zoom interview. Interviews will be conducted by a senior management member at Chatham House and relevant program representatives. After this phase, selected fellows will be informed of their acceptance via email.
