Applications are presently open for the 2024/2026 Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Fellowship Scheme. This initiative provides early-career economists and statisticians with the chance to work as public sector civil servants for two-year periods in low- and middle-income countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Western Balkans.. ODI Fellows typically hold positions as local civil servants and report to local supervisors.

Fellows are placed in various institutions, including finance and planning ministries, health and education ministries, central banks, statistics offices, and regulatory bodies.

Benefits:

  • The total compensation, net of tax, amounts to approximately £32,600 per year in the first year and £34,600 in the second year.
  • This compensation includes a housing allowance that varies depending on the cost of living in the host country.

Expected qualifications and skills: Fellowship requirements vary depending on the role and country, but all candidates should possess a combination of the following qualifications and personal qualities:

Qualifications:

  • The ODI Fellowship Scheme is open to candidates of all nationalities who hold a master’s degree or PhD in economics, statistics, or a related field.
  • Suitable specialized qualifications at the postgraduate level include, but are not limited to, agricultural economics, environmental economics, international economics, health economics, development economics, and econometrics and statistics.
  • For candidates currently pursuing a postgraduate degree, the award of a fellowship is contingent upon the successful completion of the degree program.

Applications are strengthened by a demonstrated interest in public policy, relevant work or volunteer experience, proficiency in languages (with English being essential and French particularly advantageous), and strong IT skills.


Deadline:

  • Please be aware that the application process will close on April 30th, and all applications must be submitted by 23:59 (BST) to be considered.
  • Make sure to fill out your application form within seven days of registration.

Timeline:

  • In late March 2024, the ODI Fellowship Scheme will begin accepting applications.
  • April 30th, 2024: Closing date for receipt of applications.
  • Late May 2024: Long-listed candidates are invited to submit a supporting video for their application.
  • Early June 2024: Short-listed candidates are invited to interview. Interviews take place, and offers are made to successful candidates.
  • Late July 2024: The ODI team discusses potential roles with participating governments.
  • March-July 2024: Host institutions submit requests for new Fellows, along with job descriptions and a short list of preferred candidates.
  • July–August 2024: ODI and host institutions agree on the allocation of candidates to openings.
  • During September 9th–13th, 2024, a briefing session will take place at ODI in London to equip newly appointed Fellows with the necessary knowledge and skills for their respective roles.
  • October/November 2024: Successful candidates begin their fellowships.
