The Ethiopian Law Schools Association (ELSA) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Office Ethiopia/African Union are pleased to declare a National Essay Writing Competition focusing on the theme “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.” This competition aims to stimulate critical thinking and scholarly dialogue regarding the significant role of academia in advancing the rule of law and protecting human rights within our society.
Eligibility Criteria:
– The competition seeks to ignite critical thinking and scholarly discourse on how academia can reinforce the rule of law and uphold human rights in Ethiopia.
– All enthusiastic Ethiopian undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral students studying law, political science, philosophy, or related social sciences within Ethiopia are invited to participate in this essay competition.
Essay Competition Theme:
The focus of the essay competition is on the theme “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.” Applicants have the option to either address the given main topic or explore a specific sub-theme within this topic that they feel passionate about and develop an engaging essay.
Essay Specifications:
Essay Length: Essays should not exceed 3000 words (excluding references, bibliography, and footnotes).
Formatting: Essays must be written in English and should consist of a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 pages, excluding footnotes. They must be submitted in PDF format with standard page size (8”x11” or A4). The font size should be no smaller than 12, with 1.5 line spacing. Applicants are encouraged to use a widely recognized font such as Times New Roman or Calibri.
Referencing Style: Utilize a designated referencing style (e.g., APA, Harvard, OSCOLA, etc.) for accurate citation and to prevent plagiarism.
Originality: Entries must be original, innovative, and unpublished works. Any plagiarized or previously published materials will be disqualified.
Language: Essays should be written in professional English.

Certificates of Participation:
All registered students who submit their essays on time will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Workshop and Presentation:
The essays that emerge as winners will be showcased at a workshop arranged by ELSA and KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union on May 15, 2024.. This workshop will afford authors the opportunity to showcase their ideas, participate in meaningful discussions, and contribute to the academic and legal community in Ethiopia.
