Applications are currently being accepted for the Engineering for Development (E4D) Doctoral Scholarship Programme.
The objective of the Engineering for Development (E4D) Programme is to advance research and education for individuals in low-income countries. The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation provide considerable funding for the E4D Programme..
The scholarship amount is 200,000 CHF, which covers the salary expenses of doctoral students for three years. Additionally, ETH professors provide funding for the fourth year of doctoral studies and cover research-related costs.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Fulfill the general admission criteria for doctoral studies at ETH Zurich and the respective department.
- Possess experience in the chosen research field.
- Be citizens of low- and lower-middle-income countries based on the OECD DAC-2024-25 list classification.
Application Process
The application process consists of two stages.
First Stage
Candidates are required to submit the Concept Note Application Form 2024 to the E4D programme office via email at e4d@sl.ethz.ch. Only concept notes that meet all specified requirements will be considered and evaluated by the ETH4D Committee for Exchanges to determine their suitability for the second stage. Submission of concept notes must be completed by April 30, 2024.
Second Stage
Candidates whose concept notes are approved by the E4D committee will work with the professor who has agreed to supervise the project to create a complete proposal. If the candidate and the professor are not acquainted, they must arrange a meeting to discuss the elaboration of the full proposal. This meeting may be conducted face-to-face or online.
