Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship for Women Journalists. This fellowship offers academic and professional opportunities to enhance the reporting skills of women and nonbinary journalists who focus on human rights and social justice issues. Established in memory of Elizabeth Neuffer, a correspondent for The Boston Globe and recipient of the IWMF Courage in Journalism Award, the fellowship aims to honor her legacy and advance her work in these fields.
The Neuffer Fellowship is tailored for women and nonbinary journalists with a minimum of three years of professional experience in print, broadcast, or digital media, either as staff or freelancers. Applicants of all nationalities are welcome, but non-native English speakers must possess excellent written and verbal English skills to fully engage in the program. The fellow will engage in research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and complete journalism internships at The Boston Globe and The New York Times. The program’s flexible structure allows fellows to pursue academic research and refine their reporting skills, with opportunities to publish their work under their byline in various media outlets.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Neuffer Fellowship is open to women, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming journalists who focus on human rights and social justice concerns.
- All applicants must be current journalists with at least three years of full-time professional journalistic experience. Internships and journalism-related activities undertaken during university studies do not qualify as professional experience. Applicants can be either employed journalists or freelancers.
- Journalists from any country worldwide are eligible to apply. However, fluency in spoken, written, and reading English is required to fully engage in and benefit from the fellowship.
Benefits
- Neuffer Fellows receive a fixed monthly stipend to support their living expenses.
- The IWMF arranges for and pays for the fellow’s housing in Cambridge and New York City.
- IWMF provides round-trip economy flights from the fellow’s residence to the United States, as well as transportation between the Fellowship cities.
- Health insurance is provided to the fellow during the program.
- While the Fellowship does not include a salary, it covers the costs associated with applying for and obtaining a U.S. visa for fellows residing outside of the United States.
- The fellow is responsible for any additional incidental expenses and other costs.
