Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024 Geneva Challenge, an international contest designed for graduate students. The aim of this contest, known as the Advancing Development Goals International Contest for Graduate Students, is to propose innovative and practical solutions for addressing the challenges related to youth empowerment.
With the generous support of Ambassador Jenö Staehelin, the Graduate Institute initiated the Advancing Development Goals Contest in 2014. This annual competition encourages reflection and innovation on development issues from various disciplinary and contextual perspectives.
Each year, participants are tasked with providing theoretically grounded contributions that offer pragmatic solutions to a specific international development problem. The contest emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, requiring teams of three to five enrolled master’s students from any part of the world to work together.
For the 2024 edition, five prizes will be awarded—one for each continent. The five finalist teams will have the opportunity to showcase their projects and attend the award ceremony in Geneva in November 2024. The prizes will be distributed based on the categories outlined in the UN statistics list.

Prizes:
- All shortlisted submissions chosen by the ASC will be published and promoted on the Geneva Challenge website, provided authorization is given by the teams, thus offering visibility to both the teams and their work.
- All members of the five finalist teams will be invited to Geneva for an oral presentation, during which they will defend their proposals and field questions from the jury and the public.
- The finalists will also attend the awards ceremony, during which the contest results will be announced, preceded by a keynote speech on The Challenges of Youth Empowerment.
- Travel expenses, including flights, visa applications, and accommodation, will be covered by the contest organizers for this purpose.
- The winning project will be awarded a cash prize of CHF 10,000 (ten thousand Swiss Francs). The second-place teams will each receive CHF 5,000, while the third-place teams will receive CHF 2,500 each.
