JDS 2024-2025 Scholarship: Fully Funded Opportunity for Young Kenyan Graduates

Applications are currently available for the 2024 Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).

This scholarship initiative, called the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS), was founded in Kenya in 2020. So far, it has supported a total of 29 MA and 2 Ph.D. fellows who have been sent to Japan through this program. JDS is now inviting potential candidates who comprehend its objectives and are interested in pursuing a 2-year master’s or 3-year doctoral degree program at Japanese universities for the academic year 2024-2025. The program will be conducted in English. Each year, a maximum of 13 candidates (12 MA and 1 Ph.D.) will be dispatched.

Masters:

Applicant Eligibility:

NationalityCitizens of Kenya
AgeBelow 40 years old as of April 1st, 2024 (Born on/after April 2, 1984)
OccupationPublic Servants at Target Organization
Professional ExperienceCandidates must presently hold permanent and pensionable positions in the Target Organizations, having accumulated a minimum of 2 years of service as public servants, inclusive of a probationary period, at the time of application.
Educational BackgroundHold a Bachelor’s degree from universities recognized by the Government of Kenya or equivalent institutions. While 16 years of formal education is typically mandated, relevant academic or research experience may be considered a substitute to fulfill this criterion.
Proficiency in English: While not mandatory, a preferred English proficiency level is IELTS 6.0 or higher

PhD Eligibility Criteria:

The candidate must:

  • Be a citizen of Kenya
  • Hold a Master’s degree
  • Be below the age of 45 (as of April 1st, 2024)
  •  
  • Candidates must be associated with the Target Organizations of the JDS Project and related institutions, and their research focus should address the developmental challenges of Kenya.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of work experience as a public servant, including a probationary period as a permanent and pensionable employee at the time of application (Part-time jobs and volunteer activities are not considered as work experience).
  • Submit a recommendation from the supervisor of their current duty office. The reference letter should include an evaluation of the applicant’s performance at work and the relevance of their research theme to their career.

Benefits:

All expenses related to the selection process will be funded by the JDS project.

• Candidates from rural areas will receive a modest allowance for transportation and accommodation during the selection process.
