Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025 Nordic Africa Institute Scholarship Program, providing early-career researchers in Africa with an opportunity to conduct their own research projects in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities. This scholarship grants access to the Institute’s library and various resources, fostering a vibrant research environment.
The African Scholarship Programme aims to support early career researchers based in Africa in advancing their ongoing research at the Nordic Africa Institute. Scholars benefit from access to the Institute’s library, mentorship by its researchers, networking opportunities, and other resources conducive to impactful research. By offering this program, the Nordic Africa Institute seeks to enhance capacity-building in generating knowledge about Africa and to foster connections between African and Nordic research communities.
Eligibility Criteria:
This scholarship program targets early career researchers based in Africa who are actively engaged in Africa-focused research within the Social Sciences and Humanities, particularly on contemporary Africa. The proposed research should align with the core principles of the UN Agenda 2030, reflecting the five impact areas identified by the Institute.
The program welcomes applications from two main categories of early career researchers:
- Full-time staff employed by African-based universities or research centers enrolled in a doctoral program in the African region without access to international scholarships.
- Postdoctoral researchers who completed their PhD within the last five years.
The Institute aims to ensure equitable distribution of scholarship positions concerning gender and geographic representation.
Program Duration:
Scholars may stay for a minimum of 60 days and a maximum of 90 days. It’s important to note that many academic institutions in the Nordic countries, including the Nordic Africa Institute, operate at reduced capacity or close entirely during the periods of June 15th to August 15th and December 15th to January 15th. Consequently, applicants cannot select these periods for their visit.
Benefits:
- The scholarship covers economy class return airfare, accommodation, a daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approximately 40 USD), an installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approximately 250 USD), and utilize the shared office space equipped with a desktop computer provided at the Institute. Note that the subsistence allowance is provided only for days spent in Uppsala.
- The Institute’s library specializes in contemporary African literature within the Social Sciences. Additionally, Guest Researchers have access to the Uppsala University Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
- Guest Researchers have the opportunity to showcase their research at the Nordic Africa Institute and explore other institutions across the Nordic countries..
