Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024 UN Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme. Established by UN General Assembly Resolution 35/201 in December 1980, the Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship, formerly known as the DPI Training Programme for Broadcasters and Journalists from Developing Countries, was renamed in 2003 to honor Reham Al-Farra, a Jordanian public information officer who tragically lost her life in the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad on August 19, 2003. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity for young journalists aged 22 to 35 from developing countries and countries undergoing economic transition to report on the activities of the United Nations. Held annually at UN Headquarters in New York during the autumn, the programme invites a select group of journalists to cover the opening of the General Assembly for their respective news outlets. Over the course of the 3-week programme, fellows attend special briefings, conduct interviews with senior officials, and engage in discussions with colleagues from around the world. Previous RAF Fellows have had the chance to meet with the UN Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, President of the General Assembly, and Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. Additionally, the programme organizes visits to various news organizations, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and ProPublica.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The RAF fellowship is available to full-time employed journalists aged between 22 and 35, who are nationals and residents of countries with developing economies or those undergoing transitions.
- Participation in the fellowship is limited to full-time, experienced journalists.
- Fellows are expected to engage in a series of briefings and discussions. As fellows come from diverse regions, English serves as the common language of communication during the programme, allowing fellows to publish their stories in their native languages.
Required Documents
To complete your application, please prepare the following items:
- Three (3) published work samples focusing on international affairs. These samples can be provided in their original language. For materials not in one of the six official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish), please include a summary in English.
- Your curriculum vitae is in either English or French.
- A fully filled-out application form with comprehensive responses to the open-ended questions.
