The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) program is designed to support highly capable international students pursuing master’s or PhD studies in Ireland. The initiative, a collaboration between the Government of Ireland and Irish higher education institutions, is administered by the Higher Education Authority. Annually, 60 scholarships are granted for one year of full-time study at the master’s or PhD level, and the program is open to applicants from any field of study.
Benefits:
• A Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship includes a stipend of €10,000 for one year of full-time master’s or PhD-level study.
• Recipients are entitled to a full fee waiver for the year of their scholarship from their host higher education institutions. Successful scholars are expected to begin their studies in either September or October 2024.
Eligibility:
• Applicants must be domiciled outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland/United Kingdom to qualify for a Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship.
• Candidates must apply for admission to a relevant master’s or PhD program offered by an eligible higher education institution, following the institution’s admission procedures.
• Applicants should have a conditional or final offer of admission to the higher education institution at the time of application, and a copy of the offer letter must be submitted.
• The offer letter must confirm the student’s acceptance into a full-time program as an international fee-paying student.
Note: As of March 2022, Russian and Belarussian nationals are not eligible to apply, based on a directive from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science.
Application Procedure
- Potential applicants are advised to thoroughly review the call documentation to confirm their eligibility before applying.
- An indicative version of the application form is provided for informational purposes only.
- All applications must be submitted through the online portal.
- Each application must include the upload of two references through the online portal.
- Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications well in advance of the deadline to prevent potential technical issues caused by heavy server traffic on the designated day. Applications cannot be submitted after the deadline has lapsed.
- Once an application has been submitted, no modifications can be made.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- A history of exceptional academic accomplishments.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Evidence of involvement in extracurricular activities, such as humanitarian work, politics, the arts, or sports.
- A compelling rationale for pursuing their studies in Ireland, highlighting how a Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship aligns with their long-term objectives.
Applications will initially be shared with the relevant higher education institutions, which will assess them for eligibility and shortlist them based on alignment with institutional strategic goals. Subsequently, the shortlisted applications will undergo evaluation by an independent panel of international assessors.
