Funded Fellowships at the University of Bonn – 2023 SDG (Goals)

Written by admin

Scholars, ideally from Africa, Latin America, and South/East) Asia, are invited to do research on subjects connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (for periods of 3–12 months).

Tenured professors (at the level of professor) at the University of Bonn can invite foreign postdoctoral fellows for a joint research project on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as outlined by the United Nations in its Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development through the SDG fellowship program. During one or two semesters, the scientists will do research and teach with a professor from the University of Bonn.

Special Regional Emphasis

The University of Bonn is working with a lot of universities and research centers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America right now. According to the Sustainable Development Goals index, many of the countries located in these region are going to have a difficult time putting the Sustainable Development Goals into practice. In accordance with the seventeenth Sustainable Development Goal, which is titled “Partnerships for the Goals,” scholars from the aforementioned regions are given precedence when it comes to the Bonn SDG Fellowships. The objective is to foster the careers of brilliant researchers and, via them, to construct and improve networks.

A minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve months are given as the timeframes for the funding allocation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Post-doctoral scholars at the University of Bonn who have citizenships of other countries and have been asked to participate in a collaborative research study by a professor there.
  • The fellow should have a long-term affiliation (research or teach) at a university or research institute in one of the aforementioned regions beyond the duration of her or his fellowship, and they should be able to demonstrate that they have proven expertise in an area of research that falls somewhere along the thematic spectrum of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Prospective fellows, please be informed that we are unable to facilitate introductions between you and faculty members at the University of Bonn.

Benefits

The following are some of the expenses that the funds can help cover:

  • A stipend for travel and subsistence costs (depending on country of origin)
  • A scholarship in the amount of €3,000 per month (extra money for family members: up to €300 for a spouse and €250 per kid)
  • An stipend for research expenses of up to €500 per month might be expected.

The scholarship does not include any perks or insurance coverage of any kind.

Priciples governing the selection process

There are two primary criteria that are used to evaluate proposal documents for projects:

  • Academic Quality and Mutual Gain (50%): The research project’s quality, its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as outlined by the United Nations in its Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, its applicability to current events in the fellow’s home region, and its integration into academic life in Bonn (via, for example, public lectures, seminars, or colloquia) (place of work, integration into existing teaching and research activities)
  • Strategic Importance and Plans for Future Collaboration (50%). This criterion takes into account the depth of current collaboration, the potential for long-term research partnerships between the fellow and the host institute in Bonn, the relevance of the study to Bonn’s research profile, and the plans for disseminating the findings of the research to the academic community at large.

In the event that two different proposals have the same total score, the category “Academic Quality and Mutual Benefit” will be given precedence.
