The “Enhancing Advisory Capacities for Land Policy in Africa” (SLGA) initiative, backed by the DAAD, provides fellowships for young scholars and professionals from African Union member nations focusing on Land Governance and Land Management.

The primary objective of the program is to facilitate the implementation of enhanced land policies in selected countries by African institutions and experts. Key focus areas include supporting the African Land Policy Centre (ALPC) in establishing a Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) to enhance training capacities in land management and policy, as well as promoting research tailored to African needs and facilitating measures for monitoring, evaluation, and knowledge exchange in this domain.

Fellowship Opportunities:

  • NELGA Postdoctoral Fellowships aim to encourage research and scientific communication regarding land governance in Africa, addressing the need for such activities. By selecting candidates with ties to key land policy institutions in Africa, the fellowship program contributes to bolstering institutional capabilities for land governance and evidence-based policy development.
  • NELGA Short-Term Research Fellowships are available for young African researchers at the postgraduate level, emphasizing the importance of exploring open research topics and inquiries in the realm of land management, land governance, and land policy specific to Africa.

Benefits: The standard fellowship package includes:

  • A monthly stipend of EUR 800.
  • Participation in a virtual training workshop on Advocacy for Research Output. Additionally, support for the following may be provided upon request (subject to fund availability):
  • Reimbursement of expenses for scientific publications in relevant journals, up to a maximum of EUR 1500.

Requirements:

Applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD degree from a state or state-recognized institution of higher education.
  • Have experience in land governance/management or a related area such as land administration, land economics, urban and regional planning, or geomatics.
  • Be citizens of an African country.
  • Obtain leave of absence from their home institution if conducting a field study or research stay abroad. Female applicants are encouraged to apply.
