The Mastercard Foundation has prolonged its collaboration with Makerere University for the subsequent phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, spanning from 2023 to 2034. During this phase, the Program will provide 1000 scholarships over 10 years for both undergraduate and master’s academic programs at Makerere University’s main campus.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a decade-long global initiative aimed at educating and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will contribute to social and economic development, particularly in Africa. This program enables young individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue quality secondary and tertiary education and successfully transition to further education or the workforce in their home countries.
Undergraduate:
During the second phase of the Program, 1000 scholarships will be offered over 10 years for selected undergraduate and master’s academic programs at Makerere University’s main campus.
Eligibility:
To qualify for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University, applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Applicants must be eligible for admission to Makerere University’s main campus for undergraduate degree programs under the Private Sponsorship Scheme. Therefore, all applicants should apply for admission at Makerere University’s main campus under the Private Sponsorship Scheme (when advertised). Once admitted, their application for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at Makerere University will be considered through the appropriate selection processes.
2. Applicants must have completed Advanced level education (or its equivalent) in an African country.
3. Mastercard Foundation Scholars are limited to individuals facing significant financial hardship.
4. Applicants must demonstrate leadership potential and a history of community service.
5. Applicants should not hold any other scholarships.
6. Applicants should not have enrolled in or completed any other undergraduate degree programs.
7. Applicants should be under 28 years of age at the time of applying for the scholarship.
8. Refugee applicants and students with disabilities should be under 32 years of age at the time of applying for the scholarship and must provide proof of refugee status.
Important Notes:
1. Up to 70% of the scholarship opportunities will be allocated to female applicants, while 30% will be reserved for male applicants, with further segmentation. Women applicants are highly encouraged to submit their applications.
2. Up to 25% of the scholarships will be granted to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Individuals in this category are encouraged to apply.
3. A maximum of 10% of the scholarships will be awarded to youth with disabilities. Candidates in this category are encouraged to apply.
4. Incomplete application forms will result in automatic disqualification.
5. This program upholds merit-based principles and has zero tolerance for dishonesty. Any attempts at influence peddling will lead to immediate disqualification of the applicant.
Application Procedure:
The program aims to enhance inclusive university education and empower youth to become leaders who can contribute meaningfully to national and regional development.
1. Only students who meet the minimum admission criteria for Makerere University – Main Campus, as outlined in the advertisement, are eligible to submit their applications. Completed forms should be submitted via one of the following methods:
– Submit the hard copy form in person to the offices of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University, situated at Plot 144, Pool Road, Makerere University.
– Send the completed form as an attachment to makscholarsapplications@gmail.com.
– Apply directly online (link provided at the bottom).
2. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further selection processes.
3. Please note that the application form is NOT FOR SALE, and NO PAYMENTS should be made by the applicant at any stage of the selection process.
